The Doniphan West wrestling team competed at the Chase County Tournament on Saturday, February 13th. The Mustangs, led by 3 placers, scored 76.5 points to place 6th out of 12 teams.
Senior Garret Dunlap captured the championship at 160lbs by going 3-0 with 3 pins. He opened the tournament with a 51 second pin against Tristan Neff of Wamego and followed that up with another first period fall over Braden Morgan of El Dorado. In the finals Garret used a belly buster to pin Jared Miller of Oskaloosa in the 2nd period.
Senior Kody Collins moved up a weight class and seized 1st place at 195lbs. He posted a 3-0 record in the tournament with 2 pins. In his first match he used a barbwire to pin Cole Cusick of Mulvane. In the semifinals Kody earned a 9-3 decision over Tyler Palic of Marion, the 5th ranked wrestler in class 321A. In the championship match Kody used a back side chicken wing to secure a 2nd period fall over Dustin Graham of Pleasant Ridge, the 3rd ranked wrestler in class 321A.
Sophomore Zeb Speer went 2-1 to achieve 2nd place at 152lbs. In his first match he pinned Jeremiah Atkeson of Wamego with a crossface cradle in 41 seconds. In the semifinals Zeb used another cradle to pin Dylan Campbell of Wamego in the second period. In the title bout he lost a 9-5 decision to Ethan Moorman-Maedor of Herington.
Junior Malachi Manis had a 3-2 record with 3 bonus point victories at 145lbs. He recorded a 15-0 technical fall over Savannah Schleif of Wamego, pinned Eli Schwinn of Pleasant Ridge and grabbed a 14-4 major decision over Alvin Holmes of Council Grove. Also competing for Doniphan West was freshman Austin Owen (138lbs).
Doniphan West will compete at the Regional Wrestling Tournament in Rossville on Friday, February 19th and Saturday, February 20th. The tournament will begin at 2pm on Friday and action will start at 10am on Saturday.
