2A Girls State Semifinal in Manhattan: Doniphan West 61, Pittsburg Colgan 60 in 2 OT
In a game that featured 13 ties and 16 lead changes with no team leading by more than five points throughout, Doniphan West played defense for 44 seconds at the end of regular and 58 seconds to close the first overtime, before making a pair of free throws with :10 left to earn the gritty win in double overtime. Senior, Katie Johnson was 6-6 from the foul line in the overtime sessions and finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds to push the Mustangs to their second state title game in the last three years. She earned Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha "Player to Bank On" Honors.
Doniphan West started with a 5-0 run and led 13-12 after one quarter and 41-40 at the end of the third quarter. Colgan had the 25-24 advantage at halftime but star point guard Jakayla Davis, who averages 27 points per game, tweaked her ankle and scored just two points the rest of the night after having 14 in the first half. The Panthers were 12 of 14 from the foul line but made just one of two with 30 seconds left in the second overtime to lead 60-59. After D-West hit both their charity tosses, Colgan missed a driving baseline shot before the end of the game and fall in the state semifinals for the third consecutive season.
Both teams shot 39 percent from the field but just 17 percent from three-point-land. Besides Davis 16 points, Mariah Harris had 18 points and Janessa Davis finished with nine but missed the final free throw and last Colgan shot of the night. Lauren O'Brien added 7 points as the #2 seed fell to 22-3 on the season and will play Inman for 3rd place Saturday at 2 PM.
Doniphan West got a double double from sophomore Andi Foster for the second day in a row as she posted 14 points and 10 rebounds. Belle Smith had a huge three-point play in the second overtime on a pass from Katie Johnson and finished with 13 points while Brennah Edie added 10 points and two triples despite D-West making just 3 of 16 from beyond the arc. Courtney Johnson scored 7 after leading the Mustangs with 16 in the state quarterfinals.
