It was a Twin Valley League twin bill in Highland on Tuesday night and while the girls game was lopsided from the opening tip, the boys game had plenty of drama and story lines.

GIRLS = Doniphan West 64, Wetmore 29

The D-West girls jumped quickly to a 19-point advantage and created several turnovers while scoring in transition and knocking down 7 of  free throws in the first quarter to take a 25-9 lead. The lead was 24 points going into the second half and 55-23 led to a running clock through the final eight minutes.

After making just 5-21 free throws in the previous game which was a loss to Hanover, Doniphan West went 14-18 from the charity stripe and forced nearly 30 turnovers. Avery Weathersbee scored 11 of her 19 points in the first quarter while 11 players scored for the Mustangs. Claire Cole had 8 while Kyra Johnson, Malaina Whetstine and Brennah Edie all had 6 in a balanced attack.

All D-West losses are against three ranked teams this year as they improved to 13-5 overall and 9-3 in the TVL with two games remaining against Linn and Troy.

Wetmore got 15 points from senior star Kenzie Strathman and Kaitlyn Claycamp had a nice game with 8 points and 8 rebounds as the Lady Cardinals dropped to 3-15 overall and 1-12 in TVL play with Cornerstone and Onaga left on the regular season schedule.

BOYS = Wetmore 46, Doniphan West 44 in double overtime

It was a slow start for both teams as Doniphan West has just eight players on their team and Wetmore suited up only six with a couple guys out sick. The game was tied 4-4 after one quarter and the Mustangs led 15-11 at halftime. They stretched the lead to seven in the third period and still maintained a 26-22 advantage going into the fourth stanza. Wetmore battled back and took the lead late before a D-West shot tied the game at 37 with 15 seconds to go. The Cardinals were fouled with four second on the clock and awarded two free throws after the initial call was a three-point attempt. Yet, top foul shooter Braden Henry missed both and the game went to overtime.

Eric Bloom and Jacob Carls both fouled out in overtime meaning Weston Schultejans came off the bench for the first time all night and then the Cardinals were down to just four players in the closing seconds as D-West was fouled with a couple second remaining while trailing 41-40. Creighton Johnson made the first to tie but missed the second and we went to another OT.

The Cardinals played the last period with just four players and only hit two shots, but it proved to be enough despite a couple key turnovers and Storm Hackler hit his third trey of the season and with 25 second left, Schultejans attemped and made his only shot of the night after sitting on the bench the first 35 minutes of the game. The Mustangs missed a three-pointer on their final possession.

D-West made only  of 21 free throws and had six more turnovers than Wetmore. Johnson scored 13 points while Trent Spiker added 12 on a night he was officially recongnized for being selected to compete in the Shrine Bowl football game this summer. The Mustangs, who had won in double overtime last week, drop to 6-12 overall and 3-9 in the TVL.

Wetmore got 15 points from Braden Henry, who played with foul trouble all night but never fouled out despite picking his his fourth in the final quarter. Hackler added 13 points and Carls had eight as the Cardinals won their seventh consecutive contest and improved to 13-6 on the season and 9-4 in the TVL.
