Wetmore 63, Burton 7
For the first time in school history, the Wetmore Cardinals won a Regional football title with a dominating 63-7 victory on Friday night against visiting Burton. The Cardinals improved to 8-2 including a opening round bye win last week in their first season of 6-man football.
Wetmore has not been ranked this season despite losing to only one Kansas team, which was a tight 38-32 setback to Waverly (10-0) in week six. The Cards have now held six of their opponents to seven points or less this season.
Going into the historic win against Burrton this week, some of the Wetmore statistical leaders included senior Dierk Hanzlicek rushing for 1,006 yards and 26 touchdowns this season. He’s also passed for 370 yards and six scores and had 242 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Fellow senior Kyler Wommack had passed for 838 yards and 14 touchdowns and added seven rushing scores. Jacob Carls was the Cardinals leading receiver with 547 yards and nine scores.
With 8 wins this season, Wetmore now continues their season with more victories than the last seven years combined (7 wins 2015-2021). The confident Cardinals will be to travel to # 1 ranked Cunningham for a 6 PM kickoff this Friday, November 11th. Cunningham has pitched six shutouts and allowed less than 50 points total this season.
