Lady Eagles Soar into the 3A State Title Game
For the third consecutive season, the Silver Lake Eagle softball team is moving on to the 3A State title game as the Eagles scored early and often in their 12-6 victory over #2 seed Haven in the 3A State Semifinals at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence on Wednesday.
#3 seed Silver Lake jumped all over the Haven Wildcats scoring four runs in the top of the first as the Eagles took advantage of Haven’s walks and errors with Riley Mohler and McKenna Harris supplying RBI singles.
The Eagles added two more runs in the top of the 2nd to lead 6-0. After Haven answered with 2 in the bottom of the 2nd, the Eagles tacked on another 3 runs in the 3rd with the key hit being a two-run single by junior Savanah Wende to give Silver Lake a 9-2 advantage.
To their credit, Haven kept fighting with 4 runs on 5 hits in the bottom of the 4th to cut the deficit to 9-6 and rallied to the point that the Wildcats had runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 out and the tying run at the plate, but Mohler would escape further damage to keep the Wildcats at bay.
Silver Lake added an important insurance run in the 6th on another RBI single by Harris and 2 more in the 7th thanks to an RBI double from Wende and a run scoring single by senior Paige Heiman to win 12-6.
Mohler went the full 7 innings in the circle while helping herself at the plate by going 3-5 with 2 runs scored. Wende went 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Kailyn Hanni and Saylor Liggatt set the table at top of the order, scoring 3 & 2 runs, respectively.
With the victory, Silver Lake wins their 9th in a row and improves to 27-4.
For the 3rd straight year, the Eagles are one win away from their 14th state softball championship.
