Axtell Volleyball Takes Second at Home Invite to Lead Area Performances

On Saturday the Axtell Eagles played host to four fellow Twin Valley League schools along with three schools from Nebraska for volleyball action. 

The action started with pool play as the host Axtell was partnered up with Linn, Valley Heights and Falls City Sacred Heart in the Red pool. The Eagles won the pool by going 3-0 in action with straight set wins over Valley Heights (27-25, 25-19) and Linn (25-22, 25-16), while beating Sacred Heart in three sets (26-24, 18-25, 27-25). The Irish finished second in the pool with wins over Valley Heights (25-9, 25-12) and Linn (22-25, 25-19, 25-23), while Linn won the other contest in pool play beating Valley Heights in straight sets (25-19, 25-21). 

In the Blue pool it was Diller-Odell coming out on top as they went 3-0 with straight sets in all three matches, beating Frankfort (25-23, 25-19), Wetmore (25-9, 25-8) and Lewiston (25-9, 25-12). Frankfort with a pair of wins earned second in the pool by beating Wetmore (25-11, 25-17) and Lewiston (25-13, 25-14), while Lewiston won the other contest in pool play beating Wetmore (27-25, 25-17). 

In the consolation bracket Valley Heights took on Lewiston and earned a three set win (22-25, 25-11, 25-21), while Linn beat Wetmore in straight sets (26-24, 25-8). With the loss for Lewiston and Wetmore the faced off for seventh place and Lewiston won (25-19, 25-20), while the fifth place contest went to Linn as the Bulldogs beat Valley Heights (25-21, 25-22). 

The winner’s bracket had Axtell take on Frankfort and Diller-Odell against Sacred Heart in the Semifinals with Axtell and Diller-Odell each earning wins. Axtell topped Frankfort in straights sets (25-22, 25-16), while Diller-Odell won in three sets over Sacred Heart (24-26, 25-23, 25-9). 

That put Sacred Heart against Frankfort for third place and the Irish picked up the straight set win (25-18, 26-24) to earn third place. 

Axtell took on Diller-Odell for the tournament crown and Diller-Odell finished the day unbeaten with a straight set (25-20, 25-17) win over the tournament host to earn the Axtell Invitational championship.
