(KLZA / KTNC)-- The Falls City Sacred Heart Irish boys and girls won their season openers Friday night against Sterling.
The Irish boys won 74-29 and in doing so gave their Coach, Doug Goltz career win number 695, making him the winningest high school coach in Nebraska basketball history.
Entering his 36th season at the helm of the Irish Goltz has 695 wins and 183 losses, a winning percentage of 79.2 percent.
Following the game Goltz said he was most proud of the fact that all of the wins have come as the Head Coach at Sacred Heart where he graduated high school.
Goltz credited all his former players and teams for their dedication in building a program that has won 11 State Championships in 19 state tournament appearances. Four times the Irish were knocked out of a title run by the eventual state champs.
In addition to the Irish success under Goltz on the hardwood, the Irish football teams which Goltz has served as Head Coach for 35 seasons, have been in the playoffs a Nebraska state record 35 consecutive years, winning eight state titles and rolling up 335 wins vs. Just 58 losses.
14 times the Irish have been knocked out of the playoffs by the eventual gridiron state champs.
Many former players and assistant coaches helped Coach Goltz celebrate the record breaking win Friday night after the game.
The Irish girls, also won their opener over Sterling 72 – 45.
Both the Irish boys and girls teams are ranked #1 in the pre-season poll by the Omaha World-Herald.
