The start gun has fired on the track and field season and several area teams have gotten their season started including the Atchison Redmen.
Atchison opened the track season at the Holton Invitational and junior, Alex Martin put together a spectacular individual showing to lead the Redmen track and field team. Martin sprinted past the competition winning the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes and also claimed first in the long jump for four gold medals in the first track and field competition of the season.
A time of 11.15 earned Martin first in the 100, while he won the 200 won by over a half second posting a time of 23.30 and a time of 52.78 won him the 400 earning the win by over 1.5 seconds. In the long jump the Atchison junior was on the only guy to post a leap over 20 feet notching a mark of 20’02.50 to win the event by over three feet.
As a sophomore last year Martin got a taste of the State track and field competition competing in Class 4A as he qualified for State in the 400 meter dash.
Martin looks to build upon his strong start to the track and field season and propel himself throughout the season and perhaps a return trip to Wichita to compete at State again.
