Axtell Boys Basketball

The Axtell boys basketball team claimed the Class 1A-II State Championship in Colby to cap an impressive 25-1 season with the second title in school history.

The Eagles beat Central Christian 66-46 in the first round, Dighton in the semifinals 57-51, and undefeated, #1 ranked, and defending champion Cunningham in the title game 57-39.

In the title game, Brandon Schmelzle finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Logan Sandmann finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Eli Broxterman finished with 12 points, three assists, and two steals.

Axtell won their fourth straight state football title in the fall, captured the second ever state basketball title, and now will look for their third straight state track and field title this spring.

The seniors are Eli Broxterman, Blaise Buessing, Daltyn Heinen, Gavin Shaughnessy, and Brandon Schmelzle.
