The bats were swinging early in the first game of the season for the Doniphan West Mustang baseball team and the hits and runs came early too, but the team had to hold off Heritage Christian for an season opening win, 19-14.
Sophomore, Levi Watts who had a strong football and solid basketball season this year took to the diamond with his teammates for Doniphan West and had a strong start to the baseball season against Heritage Christian. Watts notched three hits of the teams 19 in the contest and recorded four RBI’s to help led the Mustang offense, while playing shortstop for most of the game.
The final three innings of the contest Levi was called upon to finish out the contest on the mound as he made first varsity pitching debut and closed out the game to preserve the win for Doniphan West.
The Mustangs posted a record of 9-11 last year and are looking to gallop past that mark this season and starting the year with a win Doniphan West hopes that will propel them to a strong season with Watts playing a key part along with his teammates.
