Centralia Takes Down Wetmore & Valley Heights in Volleyball Triangular

It was a full slate of volleyball action across the area last night on and on the radio dial it was Twin Valley League action in Wetmore as the Cardinals played host to Valley Heights and Centralia.

On the night it was the Panthers highlighting the action as they took down Valley Heights and Wetmore both in straight sets for a 2-0 evening, while Valley Heights rallied from a first set loss against Wetmore to beat the Cardinals in three sets in the other contest. The Mustangs finished the night 1-1 in competition, while the Cardinals went 0-2.

First up on the docket for the night was the Wetmore Cardinals taking on the Valley Heights Mustangs. The Mustangs worked out to the early lead but behind the great play of junior, Corinne Haverkamp and senior, Shelby Hopkins the Cardinals propelled themselves to a lead and took home the first set 25-19. The second set proved to be all Valley Heights, as the Mustangs never trailed in the set. Junior setter, Cassidy Coggins set up junior hitter, Sidney Blackburn and her other teammates with great passes the Mustangs took control of set number two and won it 25-18. Sophomore, Taylor Doner also stepped up big with a great stretch of serves in the set for the Mustangs. With the set two win by Valley Heights that pushed the match to a third and final set, where each team traded points early in the set until a big run by Valley Heights to cement things in their favor as they went on to win the set 25-10 and take the match.

Next up the Mustangs continued their action on the night taking on the Centralia Panthers. The Panthers came out firing and clicking early and rattled of consecutive point after point in the matchup. In set one the Panthers performance was highlighted by the play of sophomore, Mayda Stallbaumer up front who registered a few kills in the set but her defense shined blocking the Mustangs spike attempts. Centralia took set one 25-8 then went on to take set two 25-8, also for the match win. Senior, Kaitlyn Koch stepped up big in the second set with some aggressive plays at outside hitter, while sophomore, Tara Bergman had a great stretch of serving in the match.

To wrap up the night the Panthers squared off with the host for the night's action in the Cardinals. It was a tale of the same for Centralia as the dominated early in the sets and took down Wetmore in straight sets 25-11 and 25-7 to win the match. Junior, Liz Hasenkamp who returned for a knee was all over for the Panthers making diving plays, while junior, Katy Haufler and senior, Blair Burdiek continued to set up their teammates with great sets.

With the 2-0 night the Panthers improved to 7-2 on the season and will not be in action again until next Tuesday (September 17th) when they are at Blue Valley-Randolph for a dual matchup. For the Valley Heights Mustangs their 1-1 night puts them at 3-1 on the season and they hit the court next on Saturday (September 14th) as they will play in the Riley County Invite. While, Wetmore with the 0-2 night remains winless on the season at 0-4 they turn their attention the Frankfort Invite this Saturday.
