Brockhoff and Meyer Lead Hiawatha Boys to McLouth Invitational Championship
Tyler Brockhoff & Sage Meyer

The start to the 2019-20 season was one to forget for the Hiawatha boys starting just 2-3 with three consecutive losses in Big 7 League play.

Since then the Redhawks have been on fire and it continued over the weekend with the Hiawatha boys claiming the McLouth Invitational championship behind the strong play of seniors Sage Meyers and Tyler Brockhoff.

Both guys were named to the all-tournament team while Brockhoff was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.

The Redhawks opened the tournament with a 64-51 win over Jeff West and it was Meyer who went off scoring 22 points while Brockhoff added 14.

Hiawatha then gave Maur Hill-Mount Academy their first loss of the year in the semifinals and avenged a sub-state championship loss from last year with a dominant 60-34 victory behind 22 points for Brockhoff and nine for Meyer on three triples.

In the title game it was again Meyer who had a blowup game as he scored 26 points on five 3-pointers which all came in the first half of a 72-53 win over Cair Paravel while Brockhoff added 15.

All in all, the Redhawks won each of their tournament games by at least 13 points with Meyer averaging 19 points per game while Brockhoff claimed the MVP award by averaging 17 points in the three games.

The tournament championship has the Redhawks 7-3 on the season heading into the second half of the season which will begin for Hiawatha Friday at home against Horton.
