For the first time since 2012 the Sabetha girls’ basketball team captured the Burlington Invitational last week beating the host Burlington in the championship game 42-29.

The Lady Jays beat all of their opponents in the tournament by 10 or more points, led by tournament MVP Melinna Schumann.

Schumann was outstanding from the opening tip of the tournament, as she combined to score 35 points throughout the three games.

She scored 14 points in the Lady Jays 48-31 semifinal win over Labette County, and followed that up with another 14-point outing in the championship win over Burlington while also pulling down nine rebounds.

On the year Schumann is averaging 8.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.4 steals per game while shooting 56 percent from the floor.

She has also scored over 10 points four times this season, including a season-high 17 points in a 48-43 loss to Royal Valley on January 4.

Schumann and the Lady Jays are off to a 9-3 start to the season and will enjoy a few extra days off before hosting Silver Lake on Friday.
