Bluejay Braeden Cox Adding Strong Kicking Dynamic to Sabetha Football
Braeden Cox

The Sabetha Bluejays are flying high and are in the State title game for the first time in 20 years as they are set to vie for the Class 3A State title and are 12-1 on the season.

In order to get the title game the Bluejays had to take down unbeaten Silver Lake in Sub-State and did so with a 17-14 victory. A key piece of the win was the play of junior kicker, Braeden Cox who was 2-2 on extra points and also booted a 28-yard field goal helping the Bluejays earn the three-point win over Silver Lake.

Many teams either simply don’t have a capable kicker or reliable kicker and that isn’t the case for Sabetha who has the sure footed Cox to split the uprights on a regular basis on extra points and given the team the option of a field goal. Cox on the year is 52-56 on PATs good for 93% and also has kickoff duties often making teams return from inside the 10 to five-yard line. The junior also gets in the mix on offense and defense and has two interceptions on the season and for two-straight years now has been named first team All-Big Seven League kicker, while picking up honorable mention All-State kicker honors last year. In his career Cox has made 90.4% of his extra points attempted going 94-104.

The Bluejays got to the State title game by first beating Maur Hill-Mount Academy 56-14 in the first round of the 3A playoffs then beating Perry Lecompton in Regionals 28-6 and took down Osage City 56-13 in Sectionals before beating Silver Lake in Sub-State. Cox during the playoffs is 18-19 on PATs and has the 28-yard field goal against Silver Lake.

Sabetha now gears up to cap their season with a State title and Cox could play yet again a critical role in the Bluejays chances to earn another win on the season and fly out on top as Class 3A State champs.
