Wetmore Cardinals, Jill Henry & Dakota McQueen Help Cardinals Back to State
Jill Henry & Dakota McQueen

For the third consecutive year the Wetmore lady Cardinals are headed to the State tournament after capturing another Sub-State title.

Wetmore in the Sub-State Semifinals took down the host of the Sub-State and fellow Twin Valley League team in Axtell winning 45-34, while then beating Southern Cloud in the Sub-State Championship in a tough battle, 39-36.

The duo of senior Dakota McQueen and junior, Jill Henry have helped lead the way all year for the Cardinals and did so in the Sub-State tournament also with their teammates. McQueen notched 14 points against Axtell and 12 versus Southern Cloud, while Henry tallied 15 points against Axtell and 11 points against Southern Cloud.

On the year the Cardinals have battled through plenty of adversity from sickness and injuries all season and both McQueen and Henry have battled through to help lead Wetmore. Henry leads the team in scoring with 11.9 points per game, while adding 3.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game. McQueen has filled up the stat sheet in several ways averaging 10 points per game along with 4.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game. Both gals are also shooting over 30% from the three-point line on the season, as Henry has scored double figures in 15 games and McQueen in 13. A 24-point showing was the best for Henry on the season coming against Onaga, while McQueen had a 20-point game versus Burlingame.

The Cardinals sit at 13-10 on the season and enter the Class 1A-Division II State basketball tournament as the eight seed for the second straight year looking to upset the one seed like last year. Wetmore tips off against Waverly on Wednesday, March 8th at 3:00pm in Dodge City for their first round State game.
