Nemaha Central Thunder Baseball Claims 3A State Title
Nemaha Central Thunder Baseball

Just four years into the program the Nemaha Central Thunder baseball team are State Champions after claiming the 3A State title to cap off their stellar season.

The season started strong with series sweeps over former State teams in Troy and Silver Lake but in the third series of the season the Thunder split with Holton for their first loss of the season. That loss proved to be the only loss of the year as Nemaha Central closed the season winning their final 17 games to finish 23-1 and win the 3A State title, Regional title and Big Seven League crown.

At Regionals the Thunder rolled into the postseason as the number one seed in the Regional at Wathena and after a first round bye took on Pleasant Ridge in the Semifinals and downed the Rams 6-0. In the Championship game Nemaha Central fell down 1-0 early to Oskaloosa but came from behind to secure the Regional title and trip to State with a 3-1 win.

With only one loss Nemaha Central earned the number one seed at the 3A State tournament in Manhattan and faced fellow Big Seven League school in Royal Valley in the opening round of the State tournament picking up the 7-1 win for their first win at State in their first trip. Rain played a factor after the Thunder’s first round game pushing action over Friday and Saturday and Nemaha Central was not rattled by the schedule change.

On Friday after the tournament wrapped up the first round Nemaha Central took on Wellsville in the Semifinal and in a dramatic fashion assured them a spot in the 3A State title game with a 2-1 walk-off victory.

In the Championship the Thunder sounded early establishing a 5-0 lead against Remington but Nemaha Central had to hold on for the win capturing the 3A State title with a 5-4 victory.

The tradition of winning and succeeding from Nemaha Valley and B&B has continued with their consolidation to form Nemaha Central and the Thunder are adding to the history.
