Brock Frey

The record might not have been daunting headed into the playoffs at just 5-4 but don’t let that fool you the Sabetha Bluejays were playing their best football at the end of the season headed into the 3A playoffs and those performances got even better with a pair of playoff wins.

Helping lead the charge all season and in the playoffs has been senior, Brock Frey who’s play against Centralia and Silver Lake helped push the Bluejays to playoff wins and a matchup against Wellsville in the Sectionals on Friday.

To open the 3A playoffs Sabetha hosted Centralia and routed the tough Panthers 42-7. Frey toted the ball 20 times for 146 yards with a touchdown in the contest leading a Bluejays rushing attack that ran for 383 yards, while also accounting for five tackles on defense and a fumble recovery.

The Bluejays headed to Silver Lake for the Regional round of the playoffs and this year got the better of the Eagles winning 34-28. Frey made his presence felt in a big way in the affair on both sides of the ball as he ran for 143 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns, while on defense recording six tackles, snagging an interception and picking up a fumble recovery and returning it 43-yards for a touchdown.

The senior seemingly made big play after big play in the contest against Silver Lake as the Bluejays were down 15-14 in the third quarter and from the 10:50 to 8:25 mark in the third Brock intercepted a pass, had a 26-yard touchdown run and had the 43-yard fumble recovery touchdown to help give Sabetha a 28-15 lead. On top of that he scored the game winning points on a 28-yard touchdown run with 1:04 left in the contest.

On the year Frey has been a leader as a senior for the team and his play as showcased that has he has 1,334 yards on 187 carries with 10 touchdowns (7.1 ypc) and has caught seven passes for 130 yards with a touchdown. Defensively he’s fourth on the team in tackles with 53, while recording two interceptions and two fumble recoveries and also has a kickoff return for a touchdown this season.

The Bluejays look to continue their flight in the 3A playoffs on Friday at Wellsville in the Sectional round as they take their 7-4 record on the road with a five-game win streak and Frey and company look to earn another win.
