Washington County Tigers Volleyball Wins Second Title in Three Years

After missing out on the State tournament last year the Washington County Tigers looked to return to the top spot in Class 2A where they were in 2012 and that they did winning the 2A State title for the second time in the last three years.

The Tigers came into the State tournament as the three seed and opened up action in pool play by claiming three straight wins over Meade, St. Mary’s Colgan and Spearville. Washington County started things off by downing Meade, 25-15, 25-22, then topping St. Mary’s Colgan with a 25-18, 25-14 win and finished pool play with a 25-18, 25-13 win over Spearville to go 3-0 in pool play action.

In the Semifinals Washington County faced a tough task in Central Plains and the match would need three sets to decide the winner, as the Tigers claimed the 20-25, 25-22, 25-23 win, moving into the Championship match. Wabaunsee was the opponent that stood in the Tigers way to reclaim the top spot in Class 2A and win the State title and Washington County picked up the straight set win 25-23, 26-24.

Going 5-0 at the State tournament, the Tigers wrapped up the season with a 39-4 record and winning their sixth State title in school history. On top of the State title the Tigers won the Frankfort and Marysville Invite’s during the season, while finishing second in the TVL regular season and TVL tournament and taking third at the Concordia Invite.

After a year out of the State tournament the Tigers made sure when they returned this year they took care of business and claimed another Class 2A State title.
