Centralia Girls Back to State Championship, Troy to Fight for Third Saturday

Familiar foes went toe to toe for three quarters of play, before Centralia dominated the fourth quarter to extend their winning streak to twenty six straight dating back to last year as they knock of Troy 58-40 in the 1A Division 1 Girls Semi-Final.

Junior Harper Whetstine got started early for Troy, hitting two straight triples to put the Trojans up 6-0 early. Centralia would settle in, led by their own sharp-shooter in Senior Oen Deters pacing the Panthers 14-4 run to close out the quarter. In the second it was a lot of the same. Back and forth, each teams exchanging blows with their stars shining bright. Troy would outscore Centralia in the second by three to trim the gap down to just one at halftime as the Panthers led 27-26 at the break. Whetstine paced the way for the Trojans, scoring fifteen of the twenty-six while Deters scored fifteen of the twenty-seven for the Panthers.

The third quarter saw both teams go on a multitude of runs with Centralia growing their lead to as many as ten midway point of the frame. Troy would fight back and cut the lead back down to one before Centralia would nail some free tosses to extend the lead back up to 39-35 at the end of the third.

The fourth quarter is where you saw the defensive intensity pick up for the Panthers. Troy would have their first three possessions of the period result in turnovers with points off of them for Centralia. The Panthers would continue their run in the fourth and balloon the lead to as many as twenty-one, outscoring the Trojans 19-5 in the final stanza. 

Centralia was led by Deters who had an impressive stat line of 24 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists, she was named the Citizens State Bank in Hiawatha & Farmers State Bank of Onaga player to bank on. The Panthers also had Tava Gibbs finish with 13 points, 11 in the second half while Hayden Kramer joined the dynamic duo in double figures with 11 points. As a team, Centralia shot 80% from the charity stripe going 12-15 while pouring in six threes in the game. UP NEXT - Centralia will play in their 11th state title game, their second in the past four seasons on Saturday at 4PM on 92.1FM KMZA vs top ranked and #1 seed Little River. It'll be a re-match of last years state semi-final game where Little River won 50-42. 

Troy was led by Whetstine who finished with 22 points and 4 assists, while Gracie Grable chipped in 7 points. As a team Troy shot 71% from the charity stripe going 10-14 while sinking four three's in the game. 

UP NEXT - Troy will try to bring home their first plaque in girls basketball history as they will play Quinter in the third place game Saturday at 12:00PM on 103.9FM KNZA.
