Familiar foes went toe to toe through three quarters in the Girls 1AD1 Semi-Final game on Friday afternoon before Centralia would pull away from Troy in the final frame stamping their spot in the title game, 58-40.
In the first, Troy Junior Harper Whetstine would drain back-to-back three’s to put the Trojans up 6-0 early. Centralia, led by Senior Oen Deters, would settle in and close the first frame out on a 14-4 run.
To start the second, it was much the same as both teams settled in offensively saw the ball tickle the nylon. Whetstine and Senior Gracie Grable would pace the way for Troy as they battled back, outscoring Centralia 16-13 in the frame to trail 27-26 at the break. Whetstine and Deters both finished the half, scoring 15 points.
After the break, Centralia came out with a focus to feed the rock to the post getting Sophomore forward Tava Gibbs involved which opened up opportunities for their guards around the permitter. The Panthers grew their lead to as many as ten in the frame before Troy would battle back to close the gap to four with Centralia leading 39-35 headed to the final frame.
In the fourth the Panthers defensive prowess picked up forcing the Trojans into three straight turnovers to begin the period. Centralia would use that momentum to ballon their lead to as many as 21 en route to the win. The Trojans were outscored by a count of 19-5 in the final stanza in large part due to the Panthers defense.
Centralia was led by Deters, who’s impressive stat line had her with 24 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists. Oen was selected as the Citizen’s State Bank & Trust in Hiawatha and Farmers State Bank of Onaga Player to Bank on. The Panthers also had Gibbs, 13 points and Sophomore Hayden Kramer, 11 points in double figures.
UP NEXT – Centralia will play in their 11th state title game on Saturday at 4:00PM on 92.1FM KMZA vs top ranked and top seed Little River. This will be a rematch from the 2024 state semi-final game where the Redskins defeated the Panthers 50-42 en route to their state title.
Troy was led by Whetstine who finished with 22 points and four assists while Gracie Grable chipped in 7 points in the game. UP NEXT – Troy will try to bring home their first plaque in girls basketball history as they take on #4 seed Quinter in the third-place game on Saturday at 12:00PM on 103.9FM KNZA.
