The Sabetha boys basketball team advanced to the Class 3A Sub-State Championship game in Hiawatha defeating St. Marys on the road 77-75 in overtime on Wednesday night.
The Bears got out to a hot start scoring the first eight points of the game and building a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Bluejays bounced back in the second quarter and dominated both ends of the floor outscoring St. Marys 18-6 in the second to take a 29-25 halftime lead.
The two squads stayed fairly even stevens the rest of the game as the Bluejays would lead 47-45 going into the fourth quarter.
There were multiple ties and multiple lead changes throughout the fourth quarter and in the final two minutes it looked like the Bears were going to pull it out.
Sabetha trailed 65-59 with under 90 seconds left in the game but would get a three pointer from LT Thomas to cut it to 65-62 coming up on the final minute.
The Bears would get one free throw from Ben DeVader to push the lead to 66-62 with under 30 seconds left.
Sabetha would bring the ball up the floor and Mitchel Kramer would step back on the left wing and hit a deep three to get the Bluejays within 66-65 at 19 seconds left in the game.
Brady Hurla would hit one free throw with 17 seconds left and the Bears would have a 67-65 lead with the Bluejays having one more opportunity to tie or win the game.
Kramer would follow his big time three point shot with an off balance desparation right wing two that banked in as the time expired to send the game into overtime.
The two teams would exchange buckets throughout the overtime period and the Bluejays would have an opportunity to win the game in the final possession of OT with the game tied at 75.
After a missed shot, Brody Deters would be fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound and he would knock down both free throws to give the Bluejays a 77-75 lead with less than two seconds left.
The Bears would turn the ball over trying to get it in and Sabetha would hold on to win an absolute thriller.
Kyler Wenger led the Bluejays with 18 points and scored six of the 10 overtime points. Thomas finished with 16 points, Micah Lang finished with 15 points, and Kramer finished with 13 points.
Brady Hurla led St. Marys with 25 points while DeVader and Howie Rezac each finished with 21 points.
The Bears end their season with a record of 16-5 while Sabetha improved to 13-9 and will play Silver Lake in Hiawatha on Saturday in the Sub-State title game with a trip to the Class 3A State Tournament on the line.
