Onaga Takes Second at Home Wrestling Invite While Several Area Teams Compete

Onaga welcomed several area teams and many others to town on Saturday for wrestling action and the tournament was packed full of great competition. 

While the team title was easily decided with Silver Lake claiming the top spot with 172.5 points that competition on the day was highly competitive. The host Onaga brought home second place as a team after just edging out Republic County in the standings 87 to 83.5 points. Riverside took fifth as a team for another top area performance, while Doniphan West, Oskaloosa, Jeff West, Hiawatha, Maur Hill and Marysville (JV) all competed on the day, too. 

Onaga on their way to a second place team performance was led by a pair of first place finishes as Garrett Ames and Quentin Lara each brought home the gold. Ames posted a 4-0 record on the mats to win the 170lbs weight class winning all his matches by pinfall in 1:40, 2:25, 3:30 and 1:32, whlie Lara won the 220lbs weight class with a 5-0 mark, picking up four pinfall wins in 3:16, 1:54, 1:37 and 5:58 and also registering a 3-1 decision win. A trio of Buffaloes picked up third place finishes as Eli Zidek (285lbs), Brandon Merriman (145lbs) and Trenton Ross (132lbs) all earned bronze medals, while Tharrin D'Aloia (113lbs) registered a fourth place finish and both Kylar Schmidt (160lbs) and Trenton Henneberg (195lbs) each earned fifth place showings. 

Three second place individual performances led Riverside to a fifth place team performance as Cyclones Donovan Duncan (195lbs), Kinstin Juhl (145lbs) and Scott Resler (138lbs) each picked up silver medals in their weight classes. Logan Hogan (126lbs) grabbed a third place finish for Riverside, while Derrick Karn (132lbs), Alston Moulden (152lbs) and Brayden Seimears (160lbs) all finished fourth and Jacob Macknight posted a fifth place finish at 170lbs. 

Garret Dunlap and Kody Collins led Doniphan West on the mats on Saturday as they both picked up first place performances. Dunlap continued his strong start to the season winning another tournament title at 160lbs by going 4-0 with four pinfall wins coming in 40 seconds, 1:16, 24 seconds and 2:52. While, Collins picked up his first tournament title win at 182lbs this year going 5-0 on the mats with four pinfall wins in 1:38, 5:59, 1:10 and 3:40 and also registering a 4-1 decision win. Second place finishes was garnered by Zeb Speer at 152lbs for the Mustangs, while Kortin Blevins took sixth at 220lbs. 

Oskaloosa Bears were led on the day by Jared Miller who finished second place at 160lbs, while Ben Harvey took third at 182lbs. Mystikal Randle (195lbs) and Lucas Hatfield (120lbs) each registered fourth and sixth place finishes for the Bears. 

Jeff West Tigers were led by a pair of third place finishes as Luke Holloman (120lbs) and Nathan Taylor (160lbs) each earned a bronze on the day. Cohl Bohannon (152lbs), Tyler Casto (145lbs) and Caden Hansen (138lbs) all finished fifth in their weight classes for the Tigers. 

A second place finish by Keenan Hinton at 220lbs led Hiawatha at the Onaga Invitational, while Damon Bamfield (120lbs) took fourth place and Levi Sparks (126lbs) finished fifth. Joseph Simpson (285lbs) and Colton Watson (138lbs) each placed sixth and seventh for the Red Hawks in their weight classes. 

Maur Hill was led by Conner Wilson who took third at 138lbs, while Benedict Humberg (145lbs) placed fourth and both Manuel Gomez (106lbs) and Fernando Plasencia (113lbs) each took fifth. Blake MisPagel also finished sixth for the Ravens at 132lbs. 

Gavin Carrillo was the only grappler on the mats for Marysville at the Onaga Invitational and he took third at 195lbs.
