It was senior night for Holton on Tuesday with a couple tight Big 7 matchups that came down to the wire.
GIRLS = Riverside 47, Holton 45
This was quite the game of runs as Riverside led 13-2 after the first seven minutes of the night, before Holton answered with a 17-2 run of their own and ended up with a 19-17 lead at halftime. The visiting Cyclones would use another third quarter boost to build a 34-27 advantage, only to see the Wildcats go on answer with a 8-0 spurt in the fourth quarter to take a 35-34 lead. It was tight until the finish when Holton had their final shot of the night blocked by Taylor Weishaar in the closing seconds.
Weishaar scored 22 of her 26 points in the second half and went 8-14 from the foul line while the next high scorers for the Cyclones were Niahla Duncan with 7 points and Abby O"Grady with 6. Riverside (17-1) bounced back from their only loss of the year (52-47) at Nemaha Central on Saturday and has one game before a rematch against the Thunder for the Big 7 League title next Tuesday.
Holton had a trio of players score in double figures for the second straight game, led by Kaiya Taylor who remained hot from the perimeter with at least four triples for the third straight game. She hit five and scored 15 points while Elizabeth Schuster added 12 points and Brooke Willcott finished with 11. Holton hit 8 of 10 from the charity stripe before falling to 7-11 on the season and 5-7 in League play. The Wildcats are 4-3 in their last seven games with those three losses by a combined five total points.
BOYS = Holton 54, Riverside 50
The Holton boys scored double figures in all four quarters to post a much needed victory after four straight losses and avenged a loss to Riverside earlier this season. The Wildcats led 24-18 at halftime and 39-33 entering the fourth quarter before growing the lead to 47-33 in the final four minutes. Yet, Ty'Zell Harrington hit back to back triples before Ryder Davis and Beckam Griffin also connected from deep to pull the Cyclones within a single possession twice down the stretch.
Holton made 14 of 26 free throws, but just 5 of 12 in the fourth quarter to barely hold on. Bodie Dillon scored 15 points while Korbin Fox added 14 and Brayden Peek chipped in 12. The Cats had nine total players contribute on offense for the first time this season and improved to 6-12 on the year and 5-7 in league play before wrapping up the regular season against top dogs Sabetha and Perry Lecompton.
Riverside was led by Harrington and Percy Duncan with 14 points each. They fall to 4-14 overall and 2-10 in Big 7 play.
