Wetmore Boys & Girls Take Third at 1A Pleasanton Cross Country Regional & Onaga Runners Qualify for State

A pair of Twin Valley League schools highlighted the Class 1A Pleasanton cross country Regional on Saturday earning spots to the State competition next Saturday. 

The Wetmore Cardinal boys cross country team took flight and earned a third place finish as a team at Regionals, taking third on a tiebreaker with Burden-Central and were only three points behind first place. Aaron Achten paced the Cardinals on the day as he registered the second fastest time in the boys race with a time of 18:23.96 to take the silver. Jonathan Bailey-Hladky, Chanler Morfitt, Beau Henninger and Orion Martin finished out the Wetmore team score with their finishes of 15th, 16th, 22nd and 26th, respectively. Curtis Bloom also competed for Wetmore finishing 29th. 

Wetmore girls are also sending their team to State after a third place team fnish. The lady Cardinals were led by Makayla Henry earned a spot at State with her ninth place finish on the day posting a time of 24:12.48. Rylain Bailey finished 14th for the Cardinals, while Myrna Crimas earned 18th place and Elizabetha Hutfles 21st.

Three Onaga Buffaloes will compete at State and one of them will head there with a Regional title under his belt as Michael Eisenbarth with a time of 17:53.54 won the 1A Regional title at Pleasanton on Saturday. Luke Marten joined him in the Top 10 in the boy's competition placing sixth with a time of 19:36.81 to earn a spot at State. In the girls race Maggie Revell notched a sixth place finish and will head to State after posting a time of 22:57.51. The Onaga boys tied with Burden-Central and Wetmore with the second best team score but missed out on qualifying for State as a team by the tiebreaker.

Doniphan West runners also competed at Pleasanton on Saturday but did not have anyone qualify for State.

The Wetmore and Onaga runners now turn their attention the Class 1A State competition on Saturday, October 31st in Wamego.
