The volleyball season got underway for three area teams over the weekend as Centralia, Axtell and Oskaloosa all traveled to Wabaunsee to hit the court for the first time this year and the Panthers opened the season by taking first in the Wabaunsee Invite, while Axtell took fourth place.
Looking to replace some pieces from a 1A-Division I State Championship last year the Centralia Panthers started the year off in solid fashion by going 4-1 in action and claiming the Wabaunsee Invitational title. Panthers finished second in pool play breezing past Oskaloosa in two sets, 25-3 and 25-5, while topping Council Grove, also in two sets 25-13 and 25-14, but lost in two tough sets against host Wabaunsee 26-24 and 25-23, to finish pool play 2-1 and second place. Coming out of pool play the Panthers took on Rock Creek the winner of the other pool in the Semifinals and grabbed the win in straight sets, 25-23, 25-10 to move into the Championship match, a rematch with Wabaunsee. In the Championship contest the teams needed three sets to decide the winner and Centralia avenged their pool play loss with the three set win; winning set one 25-22, but falling in set two 23-25, before claiming the tightly contested set three, 26-24.
For the Axtell Eagles they open the volleyball season going 2-3 and taking fourth place at the Wabaunsee Invitational. The Eagles picked up their two wins in pool play topping Osage City and Mission Valley. Axtell registered the straight set win over Osage City, 25-16, 25-21, while needing three sets to dispatch Mission Valley winning the match 25-20, 20-25, 25-16. Rock Creek was the Eagles lone loss in pool play as they fell in a tough 25-20, 25-23 two set matchup and the Eagles finished second in the pool to move into the Semifinals. In the Semifinals Axtell faced off against Wabaunsee who won the other pool and the Eagles lost in straight sets, 25-20, 25-15, moving them to the third place game in a rematch against Rock Creek, who lost to Centralia in the Semifinals. The Eagles pushed Rock Creek to three sets this time but took the loss, 16-25, 25-10, 25-19 to finish fourth place.
Oskaloosa also competed in the competition at Wabaunsee to open their volleyball season going 0-5 in action on the day. The Bears fell to Wabaunsee 25-16, 25-9, Centralia 25-3, 25-5 and Council Grove 25-14, 25-14 in pool play action. In the consolation semifinals the Bears faced off against Mission Valley and pushed that match to three sets but took the loss, falling 25-5, 13-25, 25-20, putting Oskaloosa in the seventh place game. The Bears took on Osage City for seventh and again force the match to three sets but took the loss in the contest falling 20-25, 25-16, 25-16.
The volleyball season continues for all three teams and starts for many other area teams Tuesday, September 2nd with League matchups.
