The Frankfort Wildcats are state champions for the first time in school history. They defeated Little River by a final score of 47-41.
After Little River scored the opening basket, Frankfort went on a 7-0 run. That lead wouldn’t last, though, as Little River got a 7-0 right back to take a 9-7 lead. The Redskins would have the lead for the rest of the quarter leading 14-11 after the first eight minutes. Sydney Wapp was lights out seven points and Hattie Gros scored four.
Free throws kept Frankfort in the game in the second quarter. The Wildcats only made two field goals, but they scored nine points from the free-throw line. In the first half, Frankfort shot 10-for-11 from the charity stripe to keep them within five points of the Redskins with the score being 29-24. Wapp led all scorers with 11 points shooting 5-for-5 from the free throw line and 3-for-4 in total shooting.
The Wildcats came out scorching with an 11-0 run. The Redskins didn’t get their first points until there was just 1:35 left, and they were only able to get four points as Frankfort would outscore them 13-4 to have a 37-33 going into the fourth quarter.
Gros scored the fourth quarter’s first four points to give the Wildcats an eight-point lead. Frankfort’s offense then went cold for a few minutes and Alaina Eck scored four unanswered points including the first field goal of the quarter with 2:05 remaining to make it a 41-37 Frankfort lead. Breleigh Ebert delivered a dagger with 1:30 remaining with Frankfort’s first three-pointer of the game to put them up 44-37. That set them up for just needing to make free throws, which they were able to do to hold off Little River and win the ballgame.
Wapp led all scorers with 15 points shooting 5-for-6 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. She is your Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Gros finished with 14 points going 4-for-14 in total shooting but 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Ebert scored eight points as well going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.
The Wildcats shot a total 14-for-16 from the free throw line which helped them stay in the game in the first half and helped them pull away in the second half. Frankfort shot 47.1% from the floor and just 1-for-8 from beyond the arc, but that three was the shot that secured the state title.
Frankfort finishes their season with a record of 22-3, won a sub-state championship, made their fourth semifinal appearance in school history, their first state title appearance since 1981 and their first state championship in school history. The Wildcats were led by six seniors Sydney Wapp, Emma Hardwick, Tana Stowell, Hattie Gros, Alexis Dalinghaus and Katelynn Combs.
