Tannahill Leads Area Performances at State Wrestling

The high school wrestling season officially ended on Saturday with area athletes competing in respective state tournaments and one local wrestler ended the year with a state championship.

In Class 4A the Holton Wildcats led the way with a fifth-place team finish and five guys who earned medals led by senior Konnor Tannahill who captured his second consecutive state title at 195 pounds to end his season with a 30-1 record.

Tannahill went a perfect 3-0 on the day including two wins via pin before winning a close 4-2 decision in the championship match over Tonganoxie’s Branden Martin who gave him his only loss this season back in regionals.

The Cats also received a pair of fourth place finishes from Jayden Fletcher at 152 pounds and Dalton Roush at 220 while Jake Barnes finished fifth at 120 and Tucker Gilliland sixth at 106.

The Perry Lecompton Kaws had two of their three guys at state place on Saturday led by Thad Metcalfe who finished third in the 160-pound weight class along with Hayden Robb who finished fifth at 285.

In the 321A classification just three guys earned medals on the day led by ACCHS’ Mason Scholz who took second place in the 132-pound weight after falling by pin in the championship bout. We caught up with Scholz who talked about his journey through the tournament and that interview can be found above. 

Pleasant Ridge added a fifth-place finish from Nate Wilburn at 120 pounds while Sabetha’s Josh Herrmann was the only Bluejay to place as he took sixth at 170.
