It was day two at the 41st Annual Hiawatha girls Invitational on Thursday inside the Roundhouse as second seeded Jackson Heights (2A) beat St. Mary's for the second time in a week to advance to the title game at 2:30 Saturday where they will meet Valley Center (5A).
Semifinal = Jackson Heights 44, St. Mary's 37
The Cobras jumped to a 10-2 lead and stayed ahead until the fourth quarter when St. Mary's took leads of 35-34 and 37-36. However, Jackson Heights would score the final eight points of the game, all from the free throw line, as they hit 12 of 16 foul shots in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. Kylie Dohl finished 14 of 16 at the charity stripe and hit a pair of free throws with 1:39 remaining to give Heights the lead for good at 38-37.
Dohl finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds to earn "Player to Bank on" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company in Hiawatha. Amya Marlatt added 10 points, Abby Brey had seven and Abby Williams chipped in six. Jackson Heights was 22 of 31 at the foul line for the game and improved to 10-1 on the season.
St. Mary's trailed 22-15 at halftime and ended up having three players foul out. Madison Schoemann had 14 points while Reagan Hurla added nine including a pair of fourth quarter three's. The Bears drop to 6-5 on the season and made just 4 of 11 free throws.
Semifinal = Valley Center 43, Marysville 34
Marysville won the first quarter 10-7 and lead 20-17 at halftime, but Valley Center made the three and a half hour drive worth it as they won the third quarter 12-5 and and went on to advance to the championship of the HIT with a 14-9 fourth frame. Kassie Kinniburgh (six-foot sophomore), led a balanced attack for the Hornets with 10 points while Marysville got 12 from Nicole Franco before suffering their second loss of the season.
Consolation = Horton 44, Hiawatha 14
In the battle of Brown County, Hiawtha managed only one point in both the first and third quarters as Horton added to the lead throughout the contest before forcing a running clock in the final minute. Hiawatha made just four field goals and all of them were three-point shots, including three from Josie Pierce who scored nine points before the Hawks fell to 1-10 on the season.
Horton got 11 points from Tatum Lockwood while Kaitlyn McAfee and Zoe Bone each added 10 as the Chargers stopped a four game losing streak and improved to 5-6 on the year. Bone had a couple big blocks in the first half and several rebounds while scoring a season high to earn "Player to Bank on" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha.
Consolation = Atchison 58, Falls City 50
The Lady Tigers scored 29 points in the fourth quarter, but it still wasn't enough in a game theat featured 56 fouls with Falls City starting to foul constantly and get back in the game in the final five minutes. Chesney Downing had 30 points for Atchison, who led 25-15 at halftime and used a 16-6 third quarter to put the game out of reach. Hannan Clary had 22 for Falls City.
