After a couple big stops by each team on fourth down plays in the first quarter, Hiawatha opened the scoring with a Conner Kettler seven-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead in the second period. However, the game changed on the next two plays as Bodie Dillon got free on an 87-yard QB touchdown run and then Hiawatha fumbled the ensuing kickoff. The Wildcats capitalized on a short field for another score by Cael Frazier and it was quickly 14-7 Holton, eventually leading to a 21-7 halftime advantage and 35-14 final score.
Holton ran for 552 yards on 61 carries, with 334 yards rushing in the first half alone and more than 10 plays of over 20 yards. Besides Dillon's 94-yard night, the Cats had a trio of runningbacks reach the century mark led by Kyler Jackson with 194 yards on 21 carries. Korban Wilson had 137 yards on 18 totes and a pair of touchdowns while Frazier also found the endzone twice and finished with 115 yards on 13 touches. Holton punted just once all night but was stopped on downs on three occasions with some big plays by the Hiawatha defense and Holton also fumbled once before improving to 4-3 on the season and finishing district play at 3-1.
Not only did Hiawatha put together a fantastic first 15 minutes of the game, but gave themselves a chance late and played hard until the very end. Trailing 28-7 going into the fourth quarter, Bradyn Newell found Kettler on a 25-yard TD pass to pull within 28-14. Then the Redhawk defense forced a stop on another big play by Ethyn Grant and had the ball first and goal at the three-yard-line in what looked like would be a 28-21 game with about three minutes to go. However, after a couple Hiawatha penalties, Frazier made a terrific diving interception in the endzone for Holton to preserve the win.
Holton finished the game driving 80 yards and scored on the final play of the night with a Wilson 13-yard run to give them the maximum 21-point district deferential in case of any potential tie-breakers. Their final game at home versus 6A Leavenworth is a non-district battle next week.
Hiawatha ran for 235 yards and Newell was 3-9 passing for another 53 yards. The Redhawks had nine penalties and two key turnovers. Their offense was very balanced as well with Grant rushing for 60 yards, Newell running for 50, Ethan Morton adding 46 and Josh Monaghan adding 40 yards on the ground as well as a 24-yard reception. The Hawks drop to 2-5 on the season and will wrap up district play at Perry Lecompton next week.
