Hiawatha Girls Win & Boys Cross Country Take Second Leading Area Performances at Hiawatha Invite

The Hiawatha golf course got plenty of run on Thursday but not by golfers but by runners as the cross country season continued for area teams as they were in action. 

Leading the way for the area performances was the host of the competition as the Hiawatha girls registered another first place team performance winning by 22 points over Sabetha who took second, while Silver Lake and Savannah finished out the girls team finishes in third and fourth. The Red Hawk boys finished second by only four points behind Savannah who won the meet. Falls City boys earned third place, while Sabetha took fourth and Atchison rounded out Top five. Nemaha Central, Holton and Horton all also fielded teams finishing sixth, seventh and eighth. 

On the way to first place as a team the Hiawatha girls were led by Elizabeth Kettler who posted a time of 20:11.22 to take first place by over one minute. Two other lady Red Hawks finished in the Top 10 and three more in the Top 20. Kate Madsen posted a time of 22:32.84 to take fourth, while Mary Rosa earned seventh behind a time of 22:46.62. Emma Williams, Jasmine Morey and Madison Gilbert posted 12th, 13th and 17th place showings. The Hiawatha boys were led by another strong performance by Justin Hodge who won the race with a time of 17:51.15 winning by around 20 seconds. Four other Red Hawk boys recorded Top 20 finishes as Andrew Lierz took 15th, while Liam Jones, Christian Shaffer and Parker Winters finished 18th, 19th and 20th. 

Sabetha lady Bluejays earned second place on the day led by Megan Meyer who finished fifth after posting a time of 22:38.66, while Skylar McAfee and Hattie Luckert placed ninth and tenth with times of 23:04.81 and 23:07.75. Kenzie Meyer also registered a 20th place finish in the girl’s race. Bluejay boys were led by Henry Glynn who raced to a time of 18:48.75 to earn third place, while Kaden Dillon finished 11th. 

Atchison was led by Emily Jaloma who took third in the girls race with a time of 22:07.18, while Adalyn Collins placed sixth posting a time of 22:44.75 and Teagan Hanson added in a 13th place finish for the lady Red. The Atchison boys were led by Matthew Sowers and Brennan Wheatley who with times of 19:23.15 and 19:27.37 earned ninth and tenth place. 

Falls City Tigers were led by Braden Kobza and Mazey McCullough who finished seventh (19:16.22) and eighth (23:03.38) in the boys and girls race. Brenna Leyden added a 15th place finish in the girl’s competition, while Mason Crawford and Zach Beaver placed 12th and 13th for the Tigers in the boy’s race. 

Horton, Holton, ACCHS, Nemah Central and Riverside all had one Top 20 finisher on the day. Skye Joe Coversup placed 14th for the Horton Chargers in the boys competition, while Hannah Ent earned 19th place for the lady Wildcats of Holton. ACCHS Tiger, Victoria Caplinger notched a 14th place finish in the girls race and Nemaha Central Thunder, Jordan Peterson earned 16th place in the boys action. Riverside Cyclone Matthew Kline tallied a 17th place showing in the boy’s action.
