Looking to repeat last year the Wetmore Cardinal girls entered the Class 1A-Division I State basketball tournament as the eighth seed and took on the one seed, Waverly in the first round on Wednesday. Despite leading early and at the half Wetmore ultimately saw Waverly come back and take the win 49-44.

Wetmore held a 9-7 lead after the first quarter and behind a 4-9 performance from the three-point line in the first half extended their lead to seven points going into halftime leading Waverly 22-15. The second half however it was a different story as Waverly outscored Wetmore 20-15 in the third to be within two points entering the fourth and a 12-7 fourth earned the Bulldogs the 49-44 win. The Cardinals only shot 27.3% from the field in the second half, while Waverly hit 40% from the field in the second half.

The loss for the Cardinals ended their season at 13-11 as they were at State for the third straight year. A double-double by McKayla Henry led Wetmore in the loss as she scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Jill Henry scored 12 points, nabbed seven rebounds and went 8-8 from the line. Dakota McQueen chipped in eight points with 10 rebounds.

Cardinals capped their season with a tough down to the wire loss to Waverly in the Class 1A-DI State tournament.
