Valley Falls Takes JCN Tournament Championship in Overtime Thriller
By Jonny Kane

Championship: Valley Falls vs. Rossville

Despite trailing for most of the game, the Valley Falls Lady Dragons kept their undefeated season alive with a 54-50 overtime win over the Rossville Lady Bulldawgs in the championship game of the JCN Girls Invitational Tournament Saturday afternoon.

It was a defensive struggle early with each team going on 5-0 runs to start the game and the Lady Dragons taking an 11-9 lead after the first quarter.

The second was much of the same, but this time it was the Lady Dawgs holding the advantage in the quarter winning it 11-9 to take a 21-20 lead into the break behind eight first half points from junior Amanda Hill.

Rossville extended their lead to as many as six out of the break, but a 6-0 run with 3:18 left in the third by Valley Falls kept the Lady Dragon deficit at just three, 29-26, heading into the fourth.

The final frame went back-and-forth throughout, with each team having a chance to win it in the final seconds.

Valley Falls first dribbled out a minute and half of the final 1:40 trying to take the final shot for the win, but a turnover with 10 seconds left gave Rossville a chance.

With Amanda Hill already having 13 points, Rossville head coach Michael Bell drew up a play for the senior, but her 3-point attempt at the buzzer was wide sending the game to overtime.

The extra period was dominated by Valley Falls, as the Lady Dragons went a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe to remain unbeaten on the year.

The win not only won the tournament championship, but also marked the 250th in the career of Lady Dragon head coach Todd Gish (250-146), who is in his 17th season at the helm.

Perry jumped on the Lady Chargers early forcing seven first half turnovers to lead 20-13 at the break. The Lady Kaws extended their lead to 14 heading into the fourth looking to put the game away.

An 11-0 JCN run to start the fourth cut the deficit to three, but the Lady Chargers committed 10 turnovers in the fourth quarter to allow the Lady Kaws to escape with third place.
