Valley Falls Girls Remain Unbeaten, Gatzemeyer Leads Dragon Boys

Undefeated on the season and ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, the Valley Falls girls enter each game knowing they will receive every opponents best shot.

Tuesday night, the Lady Dragons took blows from Horton early, before turning on the jets to take down the Lady Chargers 58-25 on the road.

Horton came out firing on all cylinders in the first quarter to lead 11-10, but Valley Falls stormed back off the play of sophomore Rachel Frakes, who finished with five points in the second quarter. Valley Falls took control of the game, and led 26-13 at the break.

The 3-point line came into play in the third as senior Jenna Kramer drilled three treys and recorded all nine of her points in the quarter. Valley Falls extended their lead to 26 after three to put the game away, with senior Sydney Gish scoring eight in the final frame.

Next up for the Lady Dragons (8-0, 7-0) is winless McLouth (0-8, 0-7) Friday at home. Horton (4-3) hosts Jackson Heights (3-4).

On the 2015-16 season, Valley Falls senior Marty Gatzemeyer has placed himself as one of the top players in the Northeast Kansas League, averaging 22 points per game.

Tuesday night against Horton, Gatzemeyer once again led the way for the Dragons scoring 23 points in a 46-34 road win.

Both teams struggled to find the basket early with Valley Falls holding an 8-6 advantage after the first. The offenses came alive in the second and went back and forth, and the Dragons led 20-16 at the break behind 10 first half points by Gatzemeyer.  

Valley Falls extended their lead to seven after the third as Marty dropped in seven more, and continued to extend the lead in the fourth to put the game away.

The Dragons (5-3, 5-2) now hosts winless McLouth (0-8, 0-7) Friday. Horton (5-2) stays home to take on Jackson Heights (7-0).
