2A State in Manhattan
It was a tough day to have a rough shooting day for the Horton Chargers who connected on just 22 percent from the field on Wednesday and scored a total of just 7 combined points in the second and third quarters before falling to #2 ranked Hays TMP 52-27.
The Chargers were only down 14-10 after one period and it was almost 14-13, but a three-pointer was wiped off just after the buzzer. Horton only trailed 21-13 at halftime, but Dylan Werth (6'8, senior) took over following intermission and scored 14 points after playing less than two minutes of the first half with foul-trouble.
Horton ended up with 17 turnovers and made just 2 of 12 from three-point-range before closing their season with a 15-9 record and fourth state tourney appearance in program history (first since 2008). It was as many wins as Horton had posted in the last five years combined under first-year Head Coach David Losey. And the Chargers will return all five starters next season with a roster that showcased just three seniors this year.
Cooper Wischropp scored six points while Luke McAfee and Donte Masqua each had five and Gannon Becker and Kaden Smith each chipped in four points in just the second loss in the last 12 games of the season for the Chargers.
TMP improved to 23-2 with their 21st straight victory and led from start to finish after a 5-0 start. The game only had one tie at 5-5 before the Monarchs hit three triples in the first frame to set the tone for the night. Kade Harris added 10 points and Joey Mindrup had 8 for TMP who advances to Friday's 2A state semifinals in Manhattan.
