Riverside Uses Strong Rushing Attack to Pick Up First Win of the Season
By Jonny Kane

The Riverside Cyclones used a strong rushing attack by senior running back Bryer Miller and a solid defensive showing to take down the ACCHS Tigers 38-14 Friday night in Wathena.

Both offenses had trouble with wet field conditions to open up the contest as the two teams traded possessions until the Cyclones drew first blood. After Miller had a 65-yard touchdown erased to open up the ballgame, he made sure to make it count this time as he ran it in from 34 yards out to put Riverside on the board. Junior fullback Gaige Olivero ran in the two-point conversion try to make it 8-0, Cyclones with 4:17 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Cyclones appeared to have all of the momentum as they forced a three-and-out on the ensuing Tiger possession, but a muffed punt allowed ACCHS to take over inside of the Riverside 20 yard line.

After junior tailback Hunter Ostertag ran the ball inside the five yard line, junior back Chance Ligget scampered into the end zone on a dive play to put the Tigers on the board. The conversion try failed, and ACCHS trailed just 8-6 two minutes into the second quarter.

This is where the complexion of the game changed as the Cyclones capitalized on consecutive Tiger turnovers and scored twice before the half capped off by a Miller 65-yard rush. Sophomore quarterback Andrew Miller connected with senior tight end Gant Shue on the two-point conversion and Riverside led 24-6 at the break.

Neither team found the end zone in the third quarter, but on the first play of the final frame Olivero took down ACCHS junior quarterback Lane Bowen in the end zone for a safety and the route was on as the Cyclones led 26-6 with 11:57 left in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers then went three-and-out once again, and Bryer Miller scored for the third time of the game, this time from 17 yards out to give the Cyclones a 32-6 lead as they went on for their first win of the season.

The Cyclones (1-2) head to Perry Lecompton in week four, while ACCHS (1-2) hosts Nemaha Central for homecoming next Friday.
