Holton Sweeps Riverside in Tuesday Make Up Games

On what was suppose to be a Tuesday night off following mid season tournaments, Holton hosted Riverside in Big 7 League make up games that were postponed on January 14th.  It was the Wildcats coming away with a pair of wins. 

GIRLS = Holton 44, Riverside 38

It was a slow start for both teams who were coming off muiltiple wins in their mid season tournaments but the game remained close and was tied at 21 at halftime. Holton took the biggest lead of the night with an 11-2 run to start the third quarter and go ahead 32-23, but Riverside responded with a 10-0 burst to retake a 33-32 advantage. 

Holton used a 10-5 fourth quarter to secure their third straight win and improve to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in league play. Despite 19 tunovers and no three-pointers made, Lindsey Wisdom scored 16 points while Macey Patch had 11 and Tiarra Dodd added 7 including a steal and layup in the closing seconds to secure the win.

Riverside went just 4-13 from the foul-line and made only two field goals in the final period. Taylor Weishaar scored 10 of her 16 points in the third period but was held without a shot in the fourth quarter. Tynigha Ewing added 8 for the Cyclones who had their three-game win streak snapped following a tourney championship in McLouth and now stand at 5-7 on the season and 1-6 in Big 7 play.  

BOYS = Holton 53, Riverside 38

It looked like a blowout early as Holton scored the first 12 points of the game and had the feel of a blowout late as the Wildcats went up 49-30, but it was a battle through the middle part of the contest. Riverside never led but got within 23-22 late in the second quarter and only trailed 26-22 at halftime. A 17-8 third period saw the Wildcats retake momentum and wear the visitors down. 

Holton hit eight treys and had less than 10 turnovers in improving to 7-5 on the season and 4-3 in Big 7 play. Matt Lierz had 13 points while Jaylen Turner added 11 and Tyson Snyder added 10. Holton only attempted two free throws all night but forced 19 turnovers in just their second home game since before the Christmas break.  Holton host Chapman Friday in their final non-league game. 

Riverside was led by Todrick Duncan with 15 points while Kobe Davis scored 11 and Percy Duncan hit a pair of second quarter triples to score 6. The Cyclones are now 5-7 overall and 1-6 in league play as they will travel to play Axtell this Friday.
