Top Performances Earned by Several Area Runners at Hiawatha Cross Country Invite

The weather held off with the storms but it was a muggy late afternoon for cross country on Thursday when several area teams took to the course at the Hiawatha golf course to compete in the Hiawatha Invitational and plenty of top notch performances were earned. 

In the girls competition it was the host Hiawatha Red Hawks claiming the team title by just edging Atchison by three points for first place; using three Top 10 finishers and five in the Top 20 to lead them to the win. Atchison who had two Top five finishers, including the top girl’s runner on the day took second place as a team as they have four gals finish in the Top 20. Savannah (MO) grabbed third place, while ACCHS finished only three points behind them in fourth and Falls City and Holton girls took fifth and sixth as teams. 

For the boys competition the Falls City Tigers won by a 24-point margin, as four Top 20 finishes led the way for the Tigers to take first place as a team. Atchison followed in second just four points ahead of the tournament host, Hiawatha who took third place as a team. Sabetha grabbed fourth as a team, while Savannah (MO) finished fifth. Silver Lake, Nemaha Central and Holton rounded out the team performances finishing sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. 

The top individual performance in the girl’s race came at the feet of Atchison lady Red, Sarah Jaloma as she posted a time of 20:10 to win the girls race by over a minute. Emily Jaloma joined her in the Top 10 for Atchison finishing fifth place with a time of 21:33, while Skyler Blakely and Haley Greibat placed 13th and 17th, respectively for the Atchison girls. The Redmen boys were led by Simon Holly who raced to a fifth place finish with a time of 18:22, while Matthew Sowers grabbed 10th place behind a time of 18:45.

In the boys race the top time was 17:28 posted by Riverside Cyclone, Cole Hinton who won at the Hiawatha Invitational by nearly 30 seconds. Triston Hinton of Riverside also finished in the Top 10 posting a time of 18:39 to take ninth place. 

Hiawatha Red Hawks on their way to the first place team finish for the girls were led by Elizabeth Kettler who had the top Red Hawk finish placing sixth after registering a time of 21:47. Her teammates, Aly Shamburg and Emma Williams also finished in the Top 10, placing ninth and tenth with times of 22:25 and 22:43, respectively. Molly Kettler and Mary Rosa also notched Top 20 finishes for Hiawatha placing 11th and 19th place. In the boy’s competition, Gavin Lierz led Hiawatha as he posted a fourth place finish with a time of 17:59, while Brandt Houk took seventh place after posting a time of 18:32. 

The Sabetha Bluejays had two Top three finishes on the day one in the boy’s race and the other in the girl’s competition. Keegan Cox raced to a second place finish with a time of 17:57 in the boy’s race, while Taryn Schuette registered a time of 21:26 to take third in the girl’s competition. Three more Bluejays had Top 20 finishes as Braeden Cox and Henry Glynn placed 17th and 20th in the boys competition and Megan Meyer notched an 18th place finish in the girls race. 

The Falls City Tiger boys picked up first place as a team in a wide margin and leading the way was a third place finish by Kyle Leafty as he posted a time of 17:58. Three more Tigers picked up Top 20 finishes in the boys race as Marcus Mallen, Dylan Leafty and Anthony Baker placed 12th, 13th and 16th, respectively. The lone Top 20 finishers for the lady Tigers came by Lainey Larsen who posted a 12th place finish for Falls City. 

For the ACCHS Tigers it was a pair of Top 10 performances in the girl’s competition leading the way as Beba Scholz and Madison Bissell placed fourth and eighth, respectively. Scholz notched a time of 21:32 earning her fourth, while a time of 22:21 earned Bissell her eighth place finish. 

Pawnee City Indians were led by a sixth place finish by Alex Menninga who posted a time of 18:23 in the boys action.

Nemaha Central Thunder had one Top 20 finisher as Jordan Peterson placed 14th in the boy’s race at the Hiawatha Invitational.
