Both Valley Heights Mustang teams bounced back from losses to Washington County to earn wins at home against Wetmore, as the lady Mustangs picked up the 56-45 win and the Valley Heights boys notched the 56-40 win.

While the scores mirrored each other ever so closely on the night how the games got to those finals didn't necessarily mirror each other. The night started with the Valley Heights girls hitting a stride early leading 14-0 against Wetmore before the Cardinals final broke the seal on the bucket and got their first points of the game; after one quarter it was 16-4 Valley Heights on top. A 16-12 second quarter drew Wetmore within eight points at halftime down 28-20, after Dakota McQueen hit three free throws just before halftime. Out of the half Wetmore pushed again and got with four points, but never could get over the hump as Valley Heights was able to hold off the Cardinals for the 56-45 win.

The win pushes Valley Heights to 13-4 on the season and 9-2 in TVL action as Sidney Blackburn paced the team with 23 points, scoring 10 points in the first quarter alone and earned the Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" award on KMZA radio. Kayla Smith added 19 points, including a nine point fourth quarter, while DeAndra Woodyard scored nine points. Wetmore in the loss fell to 11-8 on the year and 4-6 in TVL action; but it was only the Cardinals third loss in their last 11 games. McQueen paced the Cardinals with 16 points, going 9-12 from the free throw line, while Gerae Haverkamp posted 11 points and Jill Henry added nine points.

It was a slow start in the boys contest as neither team could score early going over three minutes before points were scored in the contest, but then the Valley Heights worked out to a early multiple bucket lead until Jeremy Hoelscher hit a three at the buzzer and it was a 12-7 Mustang led after one period. The Mustangs got things running in the second quarter outscoring Wetmore 14-6 to lead 26-13 at halftime. The lead continued to grow in the second half as Gage and Logan Woodyard continued to lead the Mustangs on the way to the 56-40 win at home.

Logan Woodyard led the Mustangs with a new season high 18 points, hitting three three-pointers and coming up with multiple steals and transition buckets along with an alley-oop assist to Elijah Smith on a dunk. Logan's performance earned him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA radio. Gage Woodyard added 14 points in the Mustangs 11th win of the season as they improved to 11-7 on the year and 7-4 in League action. Wetmore with the loss fell to 3-15 and 2-8 in TVL play and was led by Hoelscher who scored 19 points, posting 12 in the fourth quarter.

Only a few games left in the regular season for both teams as they prepare for postseason play on the horizon and both teams will not be in action again until next Friday, February 20th as Wetmore will host Clifton-Clyde and Valley Heights will be at Cair Paravel.
