Four Doniphan West Wrestlers Grab Top Eight Finishes at Silver Lake Invite

Doniphan West Mustangs continued their season on the mats on Saturday taking part in the Silver Lake Invitational against top flight competition in the State.

Four Mustang grapplers hit the mat on Saturday and all four finished with Top eight finishes as Doniphan West as a team finished 13th out of 18 teams finishing with 70 points. 

Leading the charge on the day was the number one wrestler in 3-2-1A at 195lbs that would be Tristan Speer (Troy) who continued to be dominant on the mats claiming yet again another first place finish. Speer opened the day with a bye, but then rattled off three straight wins via pinfall to go 3-0 on the day claim first place at 195lbs. In the quarterfinals Tristan picked up the win in just 17 seconds by pin, then won in 2:49 in the semifinals and took the title with a pin in 2:32 in the championship bout.

Junior, Kody Collins who ranks fourth in 3-2-1A at 182lbs picked up a third place finish at the Silver Lake Invitational. Collins had a first round bye and then in the quarterfinals picked up the pinfall win in 1:21, but in the semifinals took the loss by pinfall (4:34). With the loss Collins moved to the consolation bracket and ended his day by winning a pair of matches going 3-1 on the day to take third place; picking up two more pinfall wins in 2:21 and 1:00.

Doniphan West junior, Garret Dunlap who currently ranks first at 160lbs in 3-2-1A picked brought home a fourth place finish at the Silver Lake Invitational, by going 2-2 on the mats. After a first round bye Dunlap picked up a win via pinfall in 1:21 in the quarterfinals, but took the loss in the semifinals falling by a 8-3 decision. Garret bounced back with a 8-5 decision win in consolation action, but in the third place match took a 6-4 decision loss to place fourth.

Freshman, Zeb Speer also picked up a Top eight finish as he finished eighth at 145lbs after going 2-3 on the mats, picking up two pinfall wins in 1:03 and 2:00.

The Mustangs have just one more regular season wrestling competition left as they will participate in the Chase County Invitational on Saturday February 14th and then Regional competition comes around the next weekend.
