Doniphan West Sweeps Onaga Tuesday

It was the only home game for Doniphan West is nearly a month stretch as the Mustang teams both jumped to early leads and held on to defeat Onaga in Twin Valley League action on Tuesday night in Highland.  

GIRLS = Doniphan West 57, Onaga 43
The D West girls led 12-0 and had forced 7 turnovers in the first seven minutes of the game.  After leading 19-2, D-West let Onaga back in the game and the Buffaloes finished the first half with a 17-6 run to pull with 25-19 score at halftime.  The Mustangs put the game away in the third quarter with a 16-6 blitz and improved to 7-7 on the season with a 4-4 mark in TVL play.  

Mia Scott scored a career high 18 points to earn "Player to Bank On" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company in Hiawatha.  Regan Gibson scored 19 points with 12 rebounds and 5 blocks, and Mckenzie Blevins had a strong game with 13 points, 6 rebounds and assists, plus 4 steals.  Onaga was led by Rebekah Glessner who scored 9 of her 18 points in the final quarter while Taylor Kufahl added 10 before the Onaga girls dropped to 1-13 on the season.

After losing by three points in the third place TVL Tourney game to Onaga, the Mustangs jumped to the early 19-9 advantage at home Tuesday and never looked back.  D West led 34-19 at halftime and went up 20 early in the third quarter.  Onaga started the game missing their first 10 shots behind the arc, but did make six treys in the second half as Lucas Helget connected a few times behind the arc and led the Buffs with 17 points.  Mitchell Duer added 12 before Onaga fell to 10-5 overall and 2-4 in TVL play.  Onaga had won six of seven games entering the contest, but also made only 1 of 4 free throws on the night and had 6'11, senior, Jarod Gronewoller, miss the final 13 minutes after a technical foul.  

Doniphan West had great balance with Jeffrey Watts scoring 10 of his game high 20 points in the first quarter while Austin Taylor added 12, Cooper Leach scored 11 and Lane Spiker chipped in 9.  It was the first win in the month of February in more than 5 years for the Mustangs who are are 8-6 on the season and 4-4 in league competition after stopping a three game losing streak.
