Ravens End Fantastic Season With a Bi-District Loss to Silver Lake
By Jonny Kane

It was Class 3A Bi-District football action in Atchison, Kansas on Tuesday night between the Maur Hill-Mount Academy Ravens and the Silver Lake Eagles and after the Ravens made things interesting early it was all Eagles as they cruised to a 60-13 win.

Silver Lake got off to a fast start by forcing a three-and-out by the Raven offense and then two plays later punching it into the end zone on a 13 yard touchdown run by quarterback Ryan Matzke. It looked like the route was on after Silver Lake recovered a fumbled Maur Hill Mount Academy punt, but Chance Montgomery picked off a Matzke pass at the three yard line to prevent the Eagles from scoring. The Ravens then put together a long drive before eventually finding the end zone on a Josh Caudle quarterback sneak to tie things up at 7 with 11:00 to go in the second quarter.

It was then time for the Eagles to answer and they didn't disappoint taking the kickoff and knocking off just three minutes off the clock before finding the end zone on a 12 yard pass from Matzke to Kyle Byers with 7:48 to go in the second. The Ravens then returned the favor by orchestrating a five minute drive that ended with another Caudle one yard run to tie things back up at 13 late in the first half.

Right when it looked like Maur Hill Mount Academy was going to take all the momentum into the halftime break, the Eagles put their two minute offense out on the field and ran it to perfection finding the end zone with just 40 seconds left in the half on another Matzke to Byers connection with this time coming from 20 yards out. Justin Klein tacked on the point after for Silver Lake to put them on top 20-13 heading into the break.

Coming out of the half the Ravens really needed to make a statement on defense if they wanted to make sure the ballgame stayed within reach, but the opening kick of the half was misplayed by the Ravens kicker, giving the Eagles fantastic field position to begin the half. Silver Lake then capitalized on the Ravens mistake by punching it into the end zone  on a five yard run by Matzke and the route was then on in Atchison. The Eagles would then score five straight times on three touchdown runs by Cody Renfro, a passing score from Matzke to Jase Freeman, and touchdown run by Dalton Dultmeier which finished off the scoring on the evening giving Silver Lake the big 60-13 win.

In the win for the Eagles senior quarterback Ryan Matzke completed 13 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns while also compiling 111 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground. Silver Lake advances to the Class 3A regional round where they will take on Sabetha on Saturday afternoon.

For Maur Hill Mount Academy senior quarterback Josh Caudle finished with 113 yards passing on 22 attempts and piling up up two touchdowns rushing with negative two yards. The Ravens end their season with a 7-3 record and their first trip to the postseason for the first time in 22 years. They'll lose a great group of seniors, but will still return a lot of talent for the upcoming 2015 football season.
