Highland & Benedictine Track Squads Perform Well at William Jewell Invite

Both Highland CC and Benedictine College competed at the Darrel Gourley Open at William Jewell over the weekend and posted some top notch performances.

In the women's competition 13 teams competed and both Highland and Benedictine each earned top five finishes. The Scotties took home fourth place just six points behind third, while the Ravens registered a fifth place team performance. On the men's side of competition 15 teams competed on the day, as Highland took home third place team performance and Benedictine finished seventh.

For the Highland women their day was highlighted by a trio of first place finishes, two second place showings and four third place performances. Krystal Crohn, who is also part of the Scotties basketball team posted times of 12.07 and 25.24 to win the 100 and 200 meter dash titles on the day. Crohn was also part of the Scotties 4x100 meter relay team that took gold with a time of 49.27, as she teamed up with Mandy Wilson, Kireston Luptak and Jasmine Miller.

Wilson added to her day with a second place in the 800 meter run, while Miller grabbed a pair of third place finishes along with her performance in the relay as she took third both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles. Alyssa Cunningham and Krista Wilgers each took home a third place performance for Highland, too in the triple jump and javelin throw, respectively.

For the Highland men they had four of first place performances, led by Steven Hill who claimed first in both the long jump and triple jump with leaps of 23'01.25 and 49'04.50, respectively. Cody Patterson added another first place finish for the Scottie men as he won the javelin throw with a toss of 198'04, while Brian Martinez added the other winning the 10,000 meter run with a time of 37:43.18.

Horton native, Jacob Lott claimed a second place for the Scotties in the shot put, while Serge Terzy earned second in the 100 meter dash and a third place in the 200 meter dash. Brett Simshauser grabbed a third place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for Highland, also. While all three relay teams finished in the top three in their races, as the quartet of Rey Quinones-Velez, Clayton Stoppkotte, Simshauser and Trevon Constant earned second in the 4x800 meter relay to led the Scotties relay performances. The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams each took home third place finishes for Highland. The 4x100 team consisted of Deante Ambler, Terzy, Tyus Jacob and Dalton Ricketts, while both Ricketts and Jacob also competed on the 4x400 team with Kooper Winterscheidt of Hiawatha and Stoppkotte.

The Benedictine lady Ravens grabbed a pair of first place finishes, with one second place performance and three third place's. The 4x800 meter relay team of Regina Smart, Hannah Pinkerston, Hannah Wondra and Katherine Dillard for the Ravens raced to a time of 9:44.48 to claim first place, while Cassie Wagner leapt her way to a win in the high jump with a leap of 5'03.

Kristen Powell earned second place in the 400 meter hurdles for the lady Ravens on the day. While, Lucy Leighton, Melisa Golus and the 4x100 meter relay team grabbed third place performances. Leighton took home third in the 1500 meter run and Golus finished third in the high jump. The team of Danica Shimkus, Elizabeth Weber, Golus and Claire Bingman race on the Ravens third place 4x100 team.

Benedictine men were led by three second place performances as Chris Buhler took second in the 800 meter run, Sean Loew place second the shot put and Jacob Connealy second in the javelin. Dylan Grove added a third place for the Ravens on the day coming in the javelin.

Both Highland and Benedictine look to ride their great performances to their next competitions. For Highland they are set to compete at the Central Missouri Mule Relays on Friday April 18th in Warrensburg, Missouri; while Benedictine will have competitors at the Kansas Relays this week starting Wednesday, April 16th.
