Top honors across the State poured in after the season for one of the top high school football prospects in the State in Hiawatha Red Hawk senior, Peyton Newell this time a national honor has been handed out to Newell.
MaxPreps named Newell to its 2013 Small Schools All-American football team as a defensive lineman on the first team defense after solid senior season with the Red Hawks in which they finished 7-4 and won their first round playoff game in Class 3A for the second straight, this season beating Riley County 25-8. Peyton after the season across the area was named St. Joseph News Press Defensive Player of the Year, Topeka Capital Journal All-State, Wichita Eagle Top 11 and Coaches Association Class 3A All-State team.
Newell lead the Red Hawks on defense where he posted 76 tackles, 32 for loss, 12 sacks, four forced fumbles and had three fumble recoveries this past year, while also playing tight end on offense. Peyton before the Red Hawks season choose the University of Nebraska as his school of choice to continue his football career after his senior year; picking the Cornhuskers over KU, K-State and South Carolina.
During his time as a Red Hawk Newell helped dictate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball but shined on defense wreaking havoc in opponent’s backfield with regularity. He finishes his Red Hawk career with 257 tackles, 105 tackles for loss, 33 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, nine blocked PAT and three blocked punts.
Peyton also earned honors from MaxPreps last year being named to the 2012 Junior All-American team.
Newell finishes his Hiawatha career off with plenty of honors and two seasons of playoff appearances in his final two years, as he embarks on a new football journey next year at the University of Nebraska.
