The high school volleyball season got underway this past weekend for a pair of Twin Valley League teams as they participated in the Wabaunsee Invitational.

The 2012 Class 1A-Division I third place team, Centralia and the Axtell Eagles opened their season hitting the court against Osage City, Wabaunsee, Council Grove, St. Xavier and Mission Valley in the Wabaunsee Invite.

For Centralia it was a solid start to the season going 3-2 in action and taking home a second place finish with their only losses coming at the hands of Wabaunsee both times. The Panthers beat Osage City and Axtell in straight sets 25-15 and 25-7 versus Osage City and 25-13 and 25-10 versus Axtell, but then stumbled against Wabaunsee falling 25-17 and 25-17 in straight sets.

The Panthers then took down Mission Valley in the semifinals in straight sets winning 25-19 and 25-21, setting up a rematch with Wabaunsee for the tournament crown. Once again Centralia fell to Wabaunsee in a pair of hard fought sets this time falling 25-22 and 25-18.

For the Axtell Eagles, they didn’t fare as well as their TVL counterpart going 1-4 on the day with their lone win coming against St. Xavier in straight sets, 25-7 and 25-3 to give them seventh place in the tournament. Against Council Grove and Osage City the Eagles pushed the matchup to three sets, while against Centralia and Wabaunsee (25-13 & 25-10) they fell in straight sets. Eagles took set one against Council Grove 25-23, but fell in the next two 25-22 and 25-19. Versus Osage City it was the same deal for Axtell they won the opening set 25-22, but fell in the next two 25-17 and 25-18.

Both TVL teams now turn their attention to league action on Tuesday night (September 3rd) as Centralia hosts Troy and Washington County in a triangular and Axtell hosts Frankfort and Hanover in a triangular matchup both at 5:00pm.
