It was a double-header Monday as both Jackson Heights teams earned the number three seed in the Valley Heights 2A Sub-State. Both teams trailed most of the night against visiting Republic County, however the Jackson Heights girls rallied for a late win to extend their season to the semifinals. 

GIRLS = Jackson Heights 45, Republic County 44

Free throw shooting and a couple late turnovers left the door open for Jackson Heights and Kylie Dohl scored the final five points of the game in the last 12 seconds as the Lady Cobras rallied for the win.  Dohl hit a shot with 11 seconds left, then Jackson Heights stole the ball with full court pressure and Dohl connected again with six ticks remaining while also drawing a foul.  She hit the free throw for the final score giving Jackson Heights just their second lead of the contest 45-44 as the Buffaloes missed a long potential winning trey at the buzzer. 

Republic County led 13-6 after one quarter and was ahead 23-19 at halftime.  Jackson Heights used a 9-1 run out of the locker room to take their first lead at 28-24, but the Buffaloes answered with a 9-0 run of their own to go back ahead 33-28 and hit a trey at the end of the third quarter to keep momentum and a 36-32 advantage.  Republic County had made only 7 of 18 free throws until four straight makes by Sadee Graves in the last minute to stretch the lead to 44-39 with 40 seconds left, but they ended with 20 turnovers.  Alexis Hansen had 13 points and Izzabel Wheeler added 10 before the Buffs ended their season with a reocrd of 7-13 and graduate only one senior.  

Dohl scored 13 of her 21 points in the second half while Abby Brey and Amaya Marlatt each added seven points as the Cobras made 15 of 22 from the charity stripe to improve to 15-5 on the season.   

BOYS = Republic County 40, Jackson Heights 37

The Jackson Heights boys jumped to a 7-2 lead but it was a struggle after that as Republic County scored the next 18 points of the game and led 20-7 a few minutes into the second quarter.  Trailing 26-14 at halftime, the Cobras used an 8-0 run to start the third quarter and pull within four, but was still down 36-28 entering the fourth frame. 

JH pulled within 38-37 with 1:45 left and had a couple possessions but could not take the lead before senior Zachary Parde scored his only points of the game with two free throws to make it 40-37 with 14 seconds remaining.  The Cobras missed a potential tying trey as time expired and ended their season with a 10-10 record.  Lane Thomas scored 15 points while Levi Olberding chipped in nine as that duo and four other seniors played their last basketball game for the green and gold.  

Republic County advances to the 2A Sub State semifinals on Thursday at Valley Heights after making 10 of 12 free throws and getting a team high 10 points from 6'4 freshman Blake Aurand off the bench.  The Buffaloes are now 6-14 on the season.
