Jackson Heights Girls Punch Ticket to 2A State

After surviving a scare in the semifinals and getting a last second shot by Kanyon Olberding to beat Riverside on Thursday night (47-46), Jackson Heights was on thier A-Game on Saturday in Valley Falls as they dominated JCN for the third time this season 44-23 to claim the 2A Sub State Championship. 

Jackson Heights continued their suffocating defense and with an 18-2 second quarter advantage the Cobras led 23-11 at halftime. Dawson Cochren scored 7 of her 13 points in that second stanza and Kanyon Olberding also had 13 points while Kaylee Thompson added 8 for the Cobras. 

Jackson Heights, who three-peated as Northeast Kansas League champs and have won 45 straight league games, advances to state for the first time since 2019 and just the second time since 1999 as they are the number three seed with a 22-1 record and will open state play in Manhattan against Smith Center (19-4) at 8:00 PM on Wednesday night. JCN led 9-5 after one quarter and was led by Clara Johnson with 10 points as they end their season with a record of 14-9, which included an upset in the Sub State semifinals of ACCHS 43-37.
