Thunder Classic Day One Results

Postponed one day, the 10th annual Thunder Classic Boys Tournament got started with three games on Wednesday at Nemaha Central in Seneca.

St. Mary's 69, Holton 53

It was Holton that came out hot and jumped to an 11-3 lead, only to have St. Mary's score the next 18 points of the game over an eight-minute stretch to take a 21-11 advantage and never look back. The Bears led 31-26 at halftime but stayed hot in the second half with a 22-10 third quarter to put the game away. 

St. Mary's hit 13 three-pointers in the contest and Holton made 9 themselves. The Bears got 23 points from Brady Hurla, 16 by Zach Sommars and Ben Devader hit four triples to kick in 12 points off the bench. St. Mary's improved to 6-1 on the season. Holton was led by Bodie Dillon who had five trifecta's to score 15 points in the first half and finish with a game high 24 points. Kyler Kathrens added 11 before Holton fell to 2-6 on the season. 

Marysville 48, Jackson Heights 36

Will Otott and the Bulldogs came out firing with a 22-point first quarter and built a 35-11 lead late in the first half. However after leading 37-17 at intermission, Jackson Heights turned the tables and outscored the Bulldogs 19-11 in the second half pulling as close as 43-34 with a 17-6 run. 

Otott had 20 points while Blake Spicer added 12 as Marysville improved to 6-3 on the season. The Cobras forced several turnovers in the second half and took three charges to help get back in the game, but couldn't dig all the way out of the early hole with Jaden Gueye and Drake Mellies each scoring 10 points to pace the Cobras, who are now 4-4 on the season. 

Nemaha Central 49, Hiawatha 45

This third game was also a tale of two halves with Hiawatha controlling the first 16 minutes and leading 26-16 at the break. However an 18-6 third quarter for Nemaha Central gave the Thunderr a 34-32 lead they would maintain through the final stanza. 

Abe Hilbert had a big night inside with 18 points for NC while Trent Thomas had 9 and Evan Olberding and Colby Frehe each adding 8 points. Olberding hit a big trey in the fourth quarter then nailed three free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the victory and move the Thunder to 5-3 on the season. 

Cameron Boswell started the game on fire with 13 first quarter points, but then was held to just one made shot in each of the final three periods to finish with 21 points. Kaden Morton added 8 but battled foul trouble and had to set most of the third quarter. Hiawatha is now 4-5 on the season.
