The Perry-Lecompton Kaws defeated the Sabetha Bluejays on Friday night on the road by a final score of 12-9.
Sabetha (1-1, 1-1) scored the first touchdown of the game early in the first quarter on a 53-yard punt return by Cole Menold.
The Kaws (1-1, 1-1) would score their first touchdown on a short field in the second quarter on a seven yard run by Koltyn Kaniper. The extra point was blocked and the Bluejays led the game 7-6 at halftime.
Perry-Lecompton would receive the opening kickoff in the second half and would be forced to punt. Sabetha's first second half possession was a turnover as they lost it on a fumble just a couple of plays in.
The Kaws would score finishing off a 41-yard drive with an 11-yard pass from Garrett Metcalfe to Eli Dean which gave Perry their first lead at 12-7.
Sabetha's next four possessions included three turnover on downs and an interception. The Bluejays were out of timeouts late in the game with Perry-Lecompton trying to run out the clock.
With under 10 seconds left the Kaws were forced to punt from the back of their endzone and a high snap went out of play and the Bluejays were awarded a safety to get within 12-9 but there was only three seconds left.
The Bluejays pounced on the kickoff and gave themselves one play with a hail mary attempt but the throw ended up short and the Kaws were able to hold on for the win.
Up next for both in week three, Perry-Lecompton returns home to face Silver Lake while the Bluejays will travel to play at Hiawatha.
