Valley Falls Rushing Attack Key in Second Half at Wetmore
By Brandon Tadtman

Both Valley Falls and Wetmore entered the 2021 season with new head coaches. Valley Falls with Wyatt Hofstra and Wetmore with Miles Hanzlicek.

Both coaches were excited to get the season started and both teams had their flashes throughout their week one match up but it was the Dragons' rushing attack that was the difference in a 34-20 victory at Wetmore.

Both teams scored touchdowns on their opening drives of the season. Zac Evans capped off a 67 yard opening drive for (1-0) Valley Falls with a two yard touchdown run. That was followed by (0-1) Wetmore's opening drive with Eric Bloom catching a 14 yard touchdown pass from Dierk Hanzlicek.

Both defenses held strong for mainly the rest of the first half until Valley Falls was able to land a late touchdown in the second quarter with Samuel Drinkard punching it in from two yards out to give Valley Falls a 14-6 halftime lead.

Dylan Cervantez got Valley Falls defense going in the third quarter with an interception. After that, the Valley Falls rushing attack changed the outlook of the game.

Zac Evans extended the Dragons lead to 20-6 with a 73 yard touchdown run down the left sideline. Wetmore would fight back and pull within 20-14 early in the fourth quarter with a Kyler Wommack two yard touchdown run.

The big momentum change in the ball game followed on fourth down and two for Valley Falls in Wetmore territory but Samuel Drinkard scortched up the middle for a 27 yard touchdown scamper to extend the lead back to two scores at 28-14. Drinkard would add another touchdown run of 49 yards and the Dragons would have to hold off a late surge from the Cardinals.

The late surge from the Cardinals included a 62 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Eric Bloom.

Drinkard finished the night with 12 carries for 123 yards and three touchdowns while Evans finished with 15 carries and 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Wommack led the rushing attack for the Cardinals finishing with 18 carries and 80 yards and one touchdown.

Valley Falls will have their home opener next Friday night against Lost Springs while Wetmore is back at home and will battle TVL foe Frankfort.
