Upsets Galore in Quarterfinals of Twin Valley League Tournament

Twin Valley League Tournament Brackets – Girls & Boys 

It was upsets galore Monday night in the quarterfinal round of the Twin Valley League tournament with the top four seeds on the boy’s side going down along three of the top four seeds on the girl’s side.

Girls Quarterfinal Games

No. 1 Hanover 41, No. 8 Frankfort 44

In the biggest upset of the night the Frankfort girls made winning plays down the stretch and used clutch free throw shooting to give Hanover their first loss of the season.

The game was back-and-forth throughout with Frankfort taking a brief eight points lead in the third quarter before Hanover quickly erased that deficit and tied the game.

In the fourth quarter the Wildcats knocked down 7-of-12 shots from the charity stripe to take the victory while shooting 17-of-24 for the game.

Kennan Brandt was a monster on the glass for Frankfort with over 15 rebounds while she led the team in scoring with 12 points along with Alli Tommer adding 11. Mariah Broxterman added eight for the Lady Cats on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the line in the fourth quarter.

Hanover was led by Tianna Lohse’s 16 points while Cadlee Stallbaumer added 12.

No. 4 Centralia 56, No. 5 Blue Valley 44

In one of the only non-upset on the girl’s side Centralia jumped out to a 12-2 lead after the first quarter and overcame a halftime deficit with a 25-12 fourth quarter.

The Panthers shot 15-of-26 from the free throw line and knocked down five 3-pointers in the contest led by Kennedy Becker who racked up 22 points.

Centralia also had Olivia Kuckelman and Morgan Kramer each into double figures with 10 points apiece.

Brooklyn Zoeller led the Rams with 18 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the free throw line while Abby Cassel added 10.

No. 3 Valley Heights 48, No. 6 Doniphan West 30

From start to finish Valley Heights jumped on top of Donphan West and forced 26 total turnovers while overcoming poor free throw shooting to cruise to a quarterfinal victory.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter forcing eight turnovers while Kennedy Stevenson drilled a pair of 3-pointers.

Valley Heights pushed their lead to 11 at the half with Emma Toerber and Sam Vermetten combining for 14 first half points giving the Mustangs a 24-13 lead.

The Mustangs put the game away with a 10-7 third quarter as sophomore Maddy Vermetten came alive with seven points in the frame before forcing eight more turnovers in the fourth to halt any type of comeback.

Sam Vermetten was the only Lady Mustang in double figures as she scored 12 points while Cat Toerber and Maddy Vermetten each added eight.

Doniphan West was led in the loss by Myah Olson who finished with 11 points while Makinley Smith was held to just five points which was 13 points under her season average.

No. 2 Clifton-Clyde 40, No. 7 Washington County 49

In another major upset Washington County broke a scoreless game going into the fourth quarter with a 17-8 fourth behind five points from Camryn Boykin.

Clifton-Clyde led 13-11 after one, but a 16-9 second quarter by the Tigers gave Washington County a 27-22 lead at the half.

The third quarter was dominated by Clifton-Clyde to get back into the game and tie things up at 32 going into the fourth before the Tigers dominated the final frame.

Boykin led Washington County with 15 points on three 3-pointers while as a team the Tigers knocked down five triples.

Clifton-Clyde had just five players score in the loss with Adria Girard leading the way with 12 points while Mallory Callihan added 10.

Boys Quarterfinal Games

No. 1 Blue Valley 37, No. 8 Valley Heights 53

In the biggest upset on the boy’s side Valley Heights dominated the second half and got a huge day from junior Jackson O’Toole to take down the top seed in the TVL Tournament.

Both teams struggled to hold onto the basketball in the first half combining for 21 turnovers with Blue Valley holding an 18-16 halftime lead behind 16 first half points from senior Bryson Brockman.

Valley Heights took control with a 22-13 third quarter with O’Toole scoring 10 points in the quarter while junior Cameron Beardsley added eight giving the Mustangs a 38-31 lead going into the fourth.

In the fourth the Mustangs defense took over holding Blue Valley to just six points while shooting 4-of-6 from the free throw line to put the game away.

O’Toole was great for Valley Heights finishing with 21 points while Beardsley added 12.

Brockman did all he could for Blue Valley scoring 30 points, but only three other players scored with none of the three going over four points.

No. 4 Clifton-Clyde 53, No. 5 Frankfort 58

In a game that featured 64 free throws the Frankfort boys used a 23-14 fourth quarter to pull the upset over Clifton-Clyde 58-53.

The Wildcats jumped out to 17-8 first quarter behind five points from Aiden Gerstner while six total players scored.

Clifton-Clyde battle back with a 16-6 second to lead by one at halftime and built a five-point lead going into the fourth before Frankfort came back behind a 12-of-16 effort from the charity stripe in the fourth.

The Wildcats finished with three players in double figures led by Gerstner’s 13 points while Ethan Armstrong and Garret Dalinghaus each added 10.

Aiden Rudolph led Clifton-Clyde with 14 points in the loss while Jarik Weiche added 11.

No. 3 Washington County 47, No. 6 Axtell 48

In one of the best efforts of the day, Axtell senior Quinn Buessing put the Eagles on his back and willed his team to a 48-47 upset victory over Washington County.

Axell started slow getting down 10-0 in the first quarter before George Volle came off the bench and gave much needed life with five points to pull the Eagles within 12-8 after one.

Washington County countered with a 10-8 second quarter to take a six-point lead at halftime behind 10 first half points from junior Kobe Hoover.

That six-point lead held through the third before Buessing went off for Axtell scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter while defending Hoover who went off scoring 21 points in the game but missed a potential game-tying shot at the buzzer over a strong contest.

Buessing finished with 24 points for the Eagles in the upset while Volle added a much needed 10 off the bench while as a team Axtell got 18 bench points.

No. 2 Centralia 49, No. 7 Hanover 56

Despite trailing at the half, Hanover outscored Centralia 30-22 in the second half and forced over 20 turnovers to pull of yet another upset 56-49.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 16-10 lead after one thanks to 11 points from Emmitt Jueneman who knocked down three treys before Centralia bounced back with a 17-10 second to lead 27-26 at the half behind nine points from Kamble Haverkamp in the second.

Hanover took complete control with a 19-10 third and held Centralia to just 12 points in the fourth to halt any comeback attempt.

Jueneman led Hanover in the win with 18 points on five 3-pointers while Blake Hynek added 17.

Centralia had just one player in double figures in the loss as Haverkamp finished with 17 points on four 3-pointers.
